  • Snake venom delivers hope for stroke victims (Jewish World Review)
    The Jewish World Review reports: "The drug, known as Viprinex (ancrod), can be given by IV up to six hours after [stroke] symptoms begin. --- Gary Abrams, an associate professor of neurology at the University of California San Francisco, is quoted.
  • No cure for malignant glioma like Kennedy has (San Francisco Chronicle)
    The Chronicle reports: "Kennedy is reported to have a malignant glioma in the left parietal lobe of his brain... ." --- Dr. Susan Chang, director of neuro-oncology at UCSF Medical Center, is quoted.
  • Dr. Harry Buncke - pioneer surgeon (San Francisco Chronicle)
    The Chronicle reports: "Dr. Harry Buncke, a pioneer in the field of microsurgery who reattached severed fingers, toes and tongues and trained hundreds of surgeons how to do the same, died Sunday in San Francisco at the hospital where he opened a clinic in 1970. He was 85." Dr. Buncke was a clinical professor of surgery at UCSF.

UCSF TELEVISION COVERAGE

  • Women needed for medical research (ABC 7 Morning News - KGO-TV)
    ABC 7 reports on the significant lack of women participating in clinical trials, and UCSF's effort to change that. Laura Esserman, MD, director of the Carol Frank Breast Care Center, and Elly Cohen, project manager in the department of surgery at UCSF, are interviewed. Dr. Esserman said if not for the women who participated in earlier studies comparing lumpectomy and mastectomy, "we would still be doing radical mastectomies." - Elly Cohen and colleagues at UCSF created a website to encourage more women to volunteer in clinical trials: https://www.breastcancertrials.org/ --- Air Times: 5 and 6 AM today.
  • Kennedy May Face Lengthy Treatment for Brain Tumor (The NewsHour (PBS) -- National)
    The NewsHour reports on Sen. Edward Kennedy's diagnosis with a malignant brain tumor. Dr. Susan Chang, director of the division of neuro-oncology at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, was interviewed about brain tumors and treatment. --- Air Time: 6 and 11 PM ET; video and audio available on this url.

  • UCSF Promotes Wellness with New Initiatives (UCSF Today)
    Faculty, staff, students and trainees are encouraged to participate in a new campuswide approach to promote health and well-being. Last week, Campus Life Services and UCSF Medical Center launched a new weekly farmers’ market, a partnership with the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association.
