- 1,000 Picket Health Insurance Convention In SF (CBS5.com/AP)
The California Nurses Association organized a protest Thursday outside an insurance convention at Moscone Center demanding a single-payer healthcare system.
- Lease plants another flag in Mission Bay for UCSF (San Francisco Business Times)
The Business Times reports: "University of California, San Francisco's Department of Orthopedic Surgery has leased about 42,000 square feet at 1500 Owens St., the first tenant developer Alexandria Real Estate Equities has signed for its latest speculative building under construction in Mission Bay. Esther Morales, UCSF director of real estate, said the space would house UCSF's new Orthopedics Institute, which will be led by Dr. Thomas Parker Vail." --- Subscription required to access the full article.
- Health systems face same cost increases as rest of us (San Francisco Business Times)
The Business Times reports: "A survey of 80 health-care systems that run 200 California hospitals reveals that local hospitals continue to face challenges keeping their own employee health-care costs in line. Surveyed organizations, including Catholic Healthcare West, Children's Hospital Oakland, John Muir Health, Kaiser Permanente, Stanford Hospital & Clinics, Sutter Health, UCSF... ." --- Subscription required to access the full article.
- 3-Minute Interview: Ron Conway (San Francisco Examiner)
The Examiner reports: "The Silicon Valley venture capitalist has embarked on his latest -- and most personal -- investment. After hearing that his friend had a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease, Conway began working with UC San Francisco doctors to create a YouTube page that offers advice to people who have the disease. The site, www.youtube.com/UCSFMemoryandAging, [launched] Monday."

- Smoking and hypnosis (WPVI-TV CH 6 (ABC) Philadelphia)
Local ABC, CBS and Independent television stations throughout the country reported on a study by Timothy Carmody, PhD, a senior researcher in mental health at SFVAMC and a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues that found hypnosis was as effective as counseling in helping smokers quit and stay off cigarettes for a year. --- ABC reports: "After one year, 22% of those who had hypnosis had quit smoking, compared to 15% of those who had traditional counseling. Researchers say hypnosis appeared more effective in patients who had a history of depression.
